The catastrophic events of the Louisiana Floods has affected many of our family members and friends within the Louisiana area. Many parishes have been declared natural disaster zones. Smiley Law Firm, native to the Baton Rouge area understands your struggle.

With frequent threats of storms and rising rivers in the spring and hurricanes during the summer, Louisiana residents often face the possibility of severe natural disasters. Most recently, on August 17, 2016, the Red Cross dispatched an army of volunteers to the flood-ravaged state to deal with what the relief group is calling “the worst natural disaster to strike the United States since Superstorm Sandy.”

So far, at least 30,000 people have been rescued, some 40,000 homes damaged and 11 people killed in what officials are describing as some of the worst flooding ever in the state. Approximately 8,400 people are still in emergency shelters, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is classifying the flooding as a once-in-every-500-years event. In other words, statistically speaking, what this means is that there is a 1-in-500 chance that a region will experience a severe flood in any given year.

According to the National Weather Service, most of Louisiana has received at least one foot of rain since August 12, with some places getting 30 inches. The scale of devastation is becoming more apparent in areas where the waters have receded, and Grammy Award-winning musician Taylor Swift and fellow pop star Lady Gaga are among the celebrities coming forward to donate to the relief efforts.

Smiley Law Firm will be posting a series of blogs regarding what to do after experiencing a flood as well as the steps needed to take to ensure that you stay protected. Stay tuned.
